Wrappily’s sugarcane paper offers a fun, festive and innovative solution to holiday waste, combining sustainability with a nod to Hawaii’s agricultural roots.

Just in time for the holiday season, Wrappily Eco Gift Wrap Co., a Maui-based small business, has unveiled its innovative sugarcane paper gift wrap collection, now available exclusively at Target stores across the country.

This marks Wrappily’s first partnership with the major national retailer, bringing Hawaii’s heritage and sustainable practices to homes nationwide.

Sugarcane, deeply rooted in Hawaii's history, is gaining recognition as a sustainable material. Wrappily's sugarcane gift wrap and bags provide eco-conscious families with a stylish alternative to traditional wrapping materials, aligning with growing efforts to reduce holiday waste.

The holiday season generates a staggering amount of waste. In the U.S. alone, an extra million tons of garbage is generated each week between Thanksgiving and New Year's, with a significant portion attributed to gift wrap and shopping bags. Globally, it's estimated that 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper ends up in landfills each year. Wrappily's sugarcane paper offers a solution to this growing environmental challenge, drawing inspiration from the islands’ agricultural heritage.

"As a Maui-based company, we're incredibly proud to launch this new collection made from sugarcane paper."

Sarah Smith, founder of Wrappily Eco Gift Wrap Co.

“As a Maui-based company, we're incredibly proud to launch this new collection made from sugarcane paper,” says Sara Smith, founder of Wrappily Eco Gift Wrap Co. “Sugarcane has played an indelible role in our island’s history, and now it's helping us create a more sustainable future. This paper is a rapidly renewable resource that helps preserve our forests. It’s completely recyclable and compostable, and with our vibrant designs, a fun and festive way to wrap gifts without harming our environment.”

Sugarcane fiber, or bagasse, is an agricultural byproduct of the sugar industry. Once discarded as waste, it is now repurposed into paper products, exemplifying a fully circular and sustainable process. With a maturation cycle of just 12–14 months, sugarcane is a renewable alternative to tree-based fibers, which can take 15-30 years to regenerate.

Founded in Maui in 2013, Wrappily is a woman-owned brand dedicated to providing smarter, more sustainable gift wrap products. Smith and Wrappily have been featured on CNN, NBC Nightly News, and the Today Show, sharing her passion for reducing waste and protecting the environment. Wrappily's new sugarcane paper collection is another step towards a more sustainable future, proving that eco-conscious choices can be both stylish and responsible, and deeply connected to the spirit of aloha.
