We’re proud to introduce the ten incredible companies joining Cohort 10 of Mana Up, a Hawai‘i-based accelerator and economic development initiative that helps local product companies scale globally—while creating jobs, opportunities, and strengthening community across the islands.
On the quiet west side of Kaua‘i, nestled in a historic plantation home near the Hanapepe Bridge, a local brand is bringing the warmth, flavor, and culture of Hawai‘i to kitchens around the world. Aloha Spice Company, now led by entrepreneur and chef Keiko Napier, crafts artisan spice blends, rubs, and gourmet salts that honor both tradition and innovation—infused with a deep sense of place.
“I believe food is a bridge,” says Keiko. “It connects my Japanese heritage with the Hawaiian culture I’ve grown to love and continue learning about.”
Originally founded by Joanna Carolan, Aloha Spice Company was acquired by Keiko in 2022. Since then, she’s been building on the brand’s legacy with a fresh vision rooted in sustainability, local sourcing, and the powerful storytelling potential of flavor.
A Culinary Crossroads
Keiko’s journey to the spice business is anything but conventional. After 17 years as a stay-at-home mom, she launched her first company with no formal business experience—not even knowing how to write an email. That business would grow into an international operation with offices in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Taiwan.
“I started where I was,” she says. “And I grew with intention.”
That same mindset now fuels her work at Aloha Spice Company, where every blend is a celebration of island ingredients, multicultural influences, and the spirit of aloha. From fiery volcano rubs to delicate sea salts, each product tells a story—of place, people, and flavor.
From Home Cook to Heritage Brand
Keiko’s passion for cooking and locally grown ingredients is the heart of the company’s evolution. “My mission is to create products that reflect both where I come from and where I am now,” she shares. “That journey will continue to unfold in the future blends we develop.”
Among her favorites is the Volcano Blend Grinder —a fiery, versatile mix that works beautifully as a rub, dip, or finishing spice. “It’s incredible on deviled eggs,” she says with a smile. “It’s bold, balanced, and really represents our flavor-forward approach.”
Rooted in Hanapepe
For Keiko, building a business on Kaua‘i’s west side is about more than just commerce—it’s about community, pride, and preservation.
“Our store and manufacturing space is in a historic plantation home in Hanapepe,” she says. “It reflects not just architectural heritage, but a cultural one.”
Most of her team are local residents who take pride in what they’re creating. “We’re one of the few businesses open on Sundays,” she notes. “That means something in a town like this—it gives people a reason to stop, explore, and fall in love with Hanapepe.”
Keiko’s goal is to continue growing the business in a way that supports local jobs, uplifts the community, and educates visitors about the island’s unique cultural landscape.

Challenges & Milestones
Running a small business from Hawai‘i presents its own set of challenges: high operating costs, shipping logistics, and access to organic ingredients among them.
“We’re still working toward finding a distributor outside of Kaua‘i to help support our broader growth,” Keiko explains. “Labor and logistics are constant hurdles.”
But despite those obstacles, she’s already reached significant milestones—especially the redesign of Aloha Spice’s packaging.
“It was a big moment for us,” she says. “Not only did we make it more eco-friendly and visually appealing, but we also reduced costs and improved shelf presence. Now, our products better reflect who we are as a brand.”
Building for the Future
Looking ahead, Keiko envisions expanding the company’s global e-commerce reach while growing wholesale distribution channels. A major focus will be forging stronger relationships with local farmers to increase the availability of organic, Hawai‘i-grown ingredients.
“I want our products to celebrate Hawai‘i in every sense—not just in flavor, but in sourcing, storytelling, and sustainability,” she says. “We’re working toward a future where local food systems are stronger and more resilient.”
Staying Grounded in Community
Through every step of the journey, Keiko finds strength in her team and the support of her tight-knit community. “It’s watching my staff grow and thrive that inspires me most,” she says. “That connection keeps me grounded.”
Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in Hawai‘i? “It’s tough—but don’t give up. Persistence and passion will take you further than you think.”
