Kahulaleʻa is more than just an eye-catching clothing company–it is a team of storytellers. Inspired by life in Hawai‘i, Kahulaleʻa incorporates authentic Hawaiian designs that speak to life across the Hawaiian Islands. Owner Kehaulani Marzo Nielson has been a hula dancer her whole life. In 2013 as her family grew, she sought out ways to upcycle her old vintage hula costumes that were left hanging in her closet. It was then, she began upcycling the costumes into a fun vintage fold over clutches, and after showing them to her friends and family, they became a hit! She took them to every craft fair and pop-up shop around town, and a business was soon born.
Eventually, Kehau decided to develop original prints for Kahulale'a that celebrated Hawai‘i’s people and place. As the seasoned hula dancer she is, Kehau lovingly weaves themo‘olelo (stories) of the prints into the designs she creates, bringing to life universal themes that everyone can relate to:‘ohana (family), friends and love of the land that you are from.
